Highway 50 Double Fatality

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Wrongful Death Lawyer. A highway 50 accident claimed the lives of a driver and his passenger Sunday night in a suspected street racing incident involving alcohol. My deepest condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased motorist and his passenger.

What Happened?

The crash occurred just after 2:00pm on highway 50 near Zinfandel Drive, approaching Mather Field. Witnesses report that two vehicles were racing at a high rate of speed when one of the drivers lost control of their vehicle. The car, a Honda Accord, apparently spun out and traveled across the lanes of traffic where it was broadsided by another vehicle, a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. All but one of the westbound lanes was closed while California Highway Patrol (CHP) crews worked to clear the roadway and investigate the scene.

Fatal Injuries

Investigators report that the passenger in the Accord was killed in the impact with the Santa Fe. The force of this collision also caused the Accord’s driver to be ejected from the vehicle’s cabin and into the roadway, where he was fatally struck by a BMW 328 Sedan killing him on impact. The drivers of the two other vehicles mentioned reportedly did not sustain injuries as a result of the collisions. The other vehicle that is suspected of being involved in the initial exhibition of speed remains at large, and anyone with information about the crash has been asked to call the CHP’s East Sacramento Office at (916) 464-1450.

Investigation

Officers are still conducting their investigation but suspect that drugs or alcohol may have been involved in this incident. The investigation will hopefully reveal additional details about the crash, like whether or not seat belts were being used.
