Highway 20 Collision Fatally Injures Toddler

I’m Ed Smith, a Nevada City car accident lawyer. A car accident that occurred just northeast of Nevada city left a 2-year-old with fatal injuries and severely injured one other. The accident took place on Monday, March 12, 2018.

My deep sympathy is extended to those individuals affected by this tragedy.

What Happened?

California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on State Route 20 close to the intersection at Harmony Ridge Road. CHP indicated that Albert Silva, a resident of Grass Valley, had been driving westbound on the roadway in a 2007 Ford Focus approaching the intersection. Silva’s vehicle had a 2-year-old child inside who, authorities said, had not been properly restrained in a car seat.

While heading west, Silva reportedly drifted off the roadway and onto a gravel-paved shoulder. After driving onto the gravel, Silva attempted to veer back onto the roadway but lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle overturned and rolled several times before coming to a rest.

Emergency Response

After receiving notification of a major accident, CHP dispatchers sent emergency personnel to the crash site. Responders discovered that the toddler had been ejected from the vehicle during the accident and had sustained serious injuries as a result. The child was transported to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital for emergency care. Sadly, the child passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Silva reportedly sustained traumatic injuries as a result of the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Drunk Driving a Factor in the Accident

CHP officials reported that drunk driving was determined to be a factor. Authorities placed Silva under arrest for DUI related charges and he remains in police custody while he is in the hospital.

Other accident factors possibly involved in this collision have not yet been reported by CHP as they continue to conduct a full incident investigation.

Losing a Loved One to a Wrongful Death

Those who have lost a loved one due to the negligence of someone else may have many unanswered questions. Calling a lawyer to discuss your legal options is crucial. It’s important to have someone on your side right away before key evidence is covered up or disappears.

A good lawyer can keep vital evidence from being obscured. He or she can also make sure that you receive fair compensation from the negligent parties responsible for your loss.
