Interstate 80 Three-Vehicle Accident Causes Head Injury

A head injury was reported following a three-vehicle crash in Sacramento on November 23. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the collision happened around 5:22 p.m. along eastbound I-80 just west of Northgate Boulevard between an SUV, a black sedan and Mercedes Benz. The accident blocked the middle lane, which caused traffic to back up past I-5.

At Least One Injury Reported in Collision

One party involved in the collision was reported to have a head injury, which was assessed by the Sacramento Fire Department first responders. Tow trucks were required to remove all three vehicles due to the extensive damage. The accident is under investigation by the CHP to find out what happened and to assign fault.

Dangers of a Head Injury

Traumatic brain injuries in motor vehicle crashes are among the most dangerous types that can happen in a car accident. Although they can occur in any accident, a head injury happens more frequently in rollovers, if the seat belt is defective, and when the individual strikes the steering wheel or dash. The major types of head injuries are:

  • Concussion: Concussions are the least serious of all traumatic brain injuries. Symptoms of a concussion can include headache, dizziness, personality changes, and more. However, the effects of a concussion may be long-lasting but are temporary.
  • Hematoma: A hematoma is a blood clot that occurs inside the skull. Because it can cause pressure to increase inside the brain, it is a dangerous condition.
  • Hemorrhage: Uncontrolled bleeding in the brain itself or outside of it in the skull cavity is a serious head injury condition that can cause vomiting and headaches. Pressure buildup inside the skull can also occur in this condition.
  • Edema: Edema is swelling of the brain itself, which is dangerous because the brain may end up pressed against the inside of the skull, causing even more damage.
  • Diffuse axonal injury: This type of traumatic brain injury is often fatal and can cause serious, permanent brain damage.
  • Skull fracture: There are different types of skull fractures, and the head injury type can indicate the severity of damage to the brain. In some instances, the skull heals itself over time.

Serious Repercussions of a Head Injury

Because brain injuries are serious and can be long-lasting or even permanent, the patient may face extended hospitalization, require at-home care, or remain institutionalized. This can put a serious financial strain on the family. A lawyer who is experienced in handling brain injury cases may be able to help by obtaining compensation to not only pay for the financial loss but costs expected to arise in the future.

Investigation of an Accident

Collecting evidence to show who was at fault in an accident is necessary to prove an injury claim. We send our investigators to conduct a search for evidence quickly before it is covered up or disappears. They perform accident reconstruction and check video footage from road and surveillance cameras

In addition, the investigators talk to witnesses to the crash and check for mistakes in the police report. Once the evidence is gathered together, our injury lawyers take over to build a case that benefits our client, whether during insurance company negotiations or in court.
