Head Injuries in a Sacramento Accident

On February 26, a pedestrian in Sacramento suffered head injuries after being struck by a motor vehicle at Elk Grove Florin Road and Vintage Park Drive. The accident happened at approximately 6:40 in the evening when a white Toyota Camry was reported as having struck the pedestrian, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The vehicle sped off after the collision without stopping and offering aid. The report goes on to say that the pedestrian was transported to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center for treatment and further evaluation. The accident is under investigation by the CHP to determine how it happened.

Head Injuries in a Traffic Collision

Because pedestrians are particularly vulnerable and lack the protective features of a motor vehicle, when they are involved in an accident, injuries can be serious. Head injuries may include trauma to the scalp, skull or brain, which may range from mild to traumatic. Injuries may also be open or closed, which means that in the first instance, the injury affects the skull and brain. In the second instance of a closed head injury, there is no outward damage to the skull, but this does not preclude brain damage. Some of the most common head injuries include:

  • Concussion: A concussion is a brain injury caused by the back and forth movement of the organ in a collision or impact of the head.
  • Skull fracture: Fractures of the skull happen when a blow or impact breaks the bone. Depending on the type of fracture, it can cause different levels of trauma.
  • Hematoma: This injury refers to blood clots that collect inside the skull, putting pressure on the brain.
  • Edema: Swelling of the brain is a dangerous situation because it is enclosed inside the skull. Surgery is often required to relieve the pressure to avoid an increase in damage.
  • Hemorrhage: Uncontrolled bleeding within the skull can lead to an emergency situation requiring surgery to avoid increased damage to the brain.
  • Diffuse axonal brain injury: This dangerous condition kills the cells inside the brain and can lead to permanent damage or a fatality.

Seeking Help After a Head Injury

Head and brain injuries can cause long-term disability, while others may lead to a permanent state. This can cause financial distress to the family as they attempt to care for their loved one. I am one who believes that financial costs should never be borne by the injured party if a negligent party was responsible for the injury. Personal injury lawyers work on a contingency basis, which makes it easier for those who are seeking fair compensation to pay their medical bills, lost wages and other losses. Working on a contingency basis means that the injured person or family seeking financial compensation owes nothing unless and until the case has been won.
