Head-On Collision Kills Napa Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a Napa personal injury lawyer. On Sunday, April 30, 2017, a tragic accident on Highway 29 resulted in the death of an 86-year-old woman and longtime resident of Napa as well as the injury of two additional individuals.

Accident Details

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident took place at about 11:30 a.m. on Highway 29 near Middletown, which is situated halfway between Calistoga and Clearlake. The deceased woman had been driving a Toyota Prius southbound on the highway when she suddenly lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons.

After losing control of the vehicle, she drifted into the shoulder of the highway and over-corrected, which caused her vehicle to cross into the northbound lane, directly into the path of a passing Ford pickup truck. The Prius and the pickup collided head-on.

Injuries

When emergency responders from CHP arrived at the scene of the collision, they found that the elderly Napa woman had sustained fatal injuries and declared her dead on-scene. The two occupants of the Ford, a 61-year-old male and 56-year-old female, were both found with what medical officials reported to be moderate injuries and were flown by helicopter to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Resulting Traffic

Both of the vehicles involved in the collision were totaled and required a tow truck to be removed from the highway. Ultimately, cleaning up the wreck took work crews about an hour, during which the highway was closed to travelers. The highway reopened at about 12:45 p.m. The traffic caused by the temporary shutdown of the highway was not reported to be severe.

What Caused This Accident?

The California Highway Patrol is still actively investigating this incident and has not issued any reports detailing what they believe to have been the causal factors of this tragic accident. Common causal factors of accidents such as this one include driving while distracted, driving while somehow physically impaired (such as by exhaustion or the use of intoxicants), defective roadways or roadway design, and defective car parts.

Wrongful Death

If you have lost a loved one as the result of an auto accident, calling a lawyer is probably the last thing on your mind. The process of mourning can make legal issues seem distant and unimportant. However, at-fault parties often do not have the same emotional upset to deal with and typically get to work as soon as possible to mitigate their apparent responsibility in the eyes of insurance adjusters and courts. Having legal representation as soon as possible can prevent important evidence from being covered up by those who wish to avoid liability. Additionally, knowing somebody is taking care of these issues for you can give you peace of mind and time to focus on the important task of emotional healing.
