Grass Valley Storefront Collision Injures Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a Grass Valley personal injury lawyer. On Wednesday, May 24, 2017, one person was injured and the storefront of a Grass Valley hair salon received significant damage due to a single vehicle collision.

Accident Details

According to the Grass Valley Police Department (GVPD), the car accident occurred only a few minutes before 12:20 p.m. GVPD reported that an 84-year-old woman and resident of Grass Valley had been driving a white minivan to her afternoon hair appointment at the Mane Event Salon off of Hughes Road near the intersection of Rockwood Drive when she entered the parking lot and failed to stop her vehicle before driving into the facade of the salon.

Damages and Injuries

Photos taken at the scene of the incident show major structural damage to the front of the salon where the minivan drove clear through a wall.

While neither the driver, nor either of the two employees working at the time of the accident suffered any injuries, a woman who had been sitting by the wall and waiting for her hair appointment when the vehicle hit was injured and transferred by ambulance to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital for treatment of what medical officials reported to be minor injuries.

What Caused the Accident?

The elderly woman who drove through the building told officers that she was unable to place her foot on the brake pedal of her vehicle. In an interview with a local newspaper, Grass Valley Police Sergeant Jason Perry noted that the incident appeared to have been a “parking maneuver gone wrong.”

Storefront Collisions

According to the nonprofit group Storefront Safety Council, who have compiled their information from media reports, court records, government research, and published studies, about 24 percent of all vehicle-storefront collisions in the United States involve drivers who are over the age of 80.

Additionally, they have found that the states with the highest numbers of licensed drivers over the age of 65 are also the states with highest frequency of storefront crash incidents, with California being the second state in both categories, preceded only by Florida. Research indicates that accidents in California account for ten percent of all storefront accidents nationwide.

Recent Grass Valley Collisions

Other accidents that have occurred in Grass Valley in the past month include a May 7, 2017, accident in which a 61-year-old male resident of Grass Valley lost his life after crashing his motorcycle into an oncoming truck.

Another recent accident occurred on May 3, 2017, when a truck hauling an RV collided with an SUV outside of Grass Valley. The collision trapped two occupants trapped inside the wreckage and both were transported by helicopter to a hospital in Roseville for treatment of their injuries.
