Grass Valley High School Students Remembered

I’m Ed Smith, a Grass Valley car accident lawyer. On Friday, December 15, 2017, Bear River High School held a memorial service for two former students who lost their lives in a fatal auto accident last year.

The Auto Accident

Jude Douden and Joe Rantz were both 18-years-old when they were involved in a collision on Highway 49 that took place on December 15, 2016. The students had been in a white 1999 BMW driving south on the highway during a storm at about 1:15 p.m.

Reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the driver of the vehicle that the students had been in lost control and consequently sped into a northbound lane of oncoming traffic. After entering the northbound lane, the BMW collided head-on with a utility truck. Authorities reported that both boys had been wearing seatbelts when the accident happened.

Responding officers said that they found both boys at the site of the auto accident with fatal injuries.

Remembering Peers

Bear River High School set up tables during lunch for students to write notes for the deceased pair. After observing a moment of silence on the school football field, students released balloons into the sky. Faculty at the school said that even school alumni showed up to pay their respect.

Sarah Kennedy, a friend of the deceased, said to reporters that “It will mean a lot to a lot of people that people actually care still.”

Wrongful Death

After losing a person you love, the grief can be paralyzing. Many people dealing with loss find it difficult to focus on things like the legal aspects of a case. Calling a lawyer can seem unimportant in comparison to the task of healing emotionally and learning to live without a person you used to rely on.

However, calling a lawyer can not only help you to recover money for your losses but knowing that a professional is doing the legal work for you can also help individuals to focus on emotional recovery.

Recoverable Damages

A loved one can never be replaced. However, in the event of a wrongful death, negligent parties can be held responsible for many different types of damage. The damages that individuals are able to recover include things like loss of parental guidance, burial and funeral costs, loss of future financial support, loss of comfort, affection, moral support, and companionship, loss of inheritance, medical expenses incurred before death, and more.
