Freeway Collision Kills Vallejo Man, Injures Others

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo auto accident lawyer. On Sunday, February 11, 2018, a 60-year-old man from Vallejo lost his life and several other individuals were seriously injured due to a three-vehicle collision in a construction zone along Interstate-80.

I’d like to offer my condolences to Mr. Gamboa’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Accident Information

Officers from the Solano Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the collision occurred shortly before 12:20 a.m. on the westbound side of Highway Interstate 80 east of the intersection at Midway Road in Vacaville where construction workers were making preparations in order to close both directions of the highway so that they could work on the Midway Road overpass. Reports indicate that, at the time of the collision, the Number 1 lane was closed, but the Number 2 and 3 lanes were still open.

The CHP report states that traffic had begun to slow down for the merge. Among the vehicles slowing down was a black Chrysler in the Number 3 lane and Honda CRV in the Number 2 lane. The report goes on to say that the exact order in which the collision occurred remains undetermined, but that a black Expedition had been approaching the rear-end of both aforementioned vehicles and failed to reduce its speed. The Expedition reportedly side-swiped the driver’s side of the Chrysler and collided with the rear of the Honda.

Injuries

The rear-ended Honda had been carrying a driver and three passengers at the time of the accident. The left-rear passenger, identified as 60-year-old Vallejo resident Ricardo Gamboa, received fatal trauma during the crash and was declared officially dead at the accident site. The remaining passengers and driver of the Honda were all taken to the Kaiser Permanente Medical center for treatment of what were reported to be serious injuries.

The injured Honda occupants were identified as Vallejo residents Nelson Abadeza, a 49-year-old man, Rowena Abadeza, a 56-year-old woman, and Marissa Gamboa, a 60-year-old woman. Additionally, the report indicates that none of the other involved drivers received injuries during the accident.

Causal Factors

CHP reported that they have negated intoxicated driving as an accident factor. The collision is currently under investigation by authorities and may have involved factors like distracted driving, driving under extreme fatigue, a malfunctioning auto part such as brakes or steering systems, and more.

Wrongful Death

When an individual receives fatal injuries and a negligent party is at-fault, it is considered a case of wrongful death.
