Fort Bragg Logging Accident Kills Young Man

Fort Bragg Logging Accident Kills Young Man

I’m Ed Smith, a Fort Bragg personal injury lawyer. An accident which occurred last month was reported on May 9 in Fort Bragg, where a local man died as the result of an accident while logging.

My sympathy goes to the fiance, child and other family members in this tragedy.

What Happened

Last month, a logger, 22, who was working near the Ten Mile Logging Road up on Bucha Ridge for a logging company as a chokersetter, was securing cables around some trees so the trees could be pulled up the hill when a log fell and dislodged a tree bundle. The bundle hit the young father of an infant son and killed him. It was only his second day working at the job. There are no further details about the accident. Currently, it is being investigated by the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

On-the-Job Accidents

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, working as a chokersetter, as this man was, is a dangerous job, especially when conducting a skyline-skidding operation. The job of a chokersetter is to secure the chokers (cables) around the tree logs and fasten them to the carriage, which then lifts it. OSHA reports that it is important to maintain equipment properly and regularly to avoid accidents. This includes implementing safe working procedures both for the machine operators and workers specific to the site. It also includes the amount of time a worker spends underneath the carriage and standing near it. Instructions should be posted on or near the machine and an inspection conducted before each work shift. In addition, modifications to the machine should not be made without using a qualified engineer or written permission from the manufacturer.

Wrongful Death

Because safety measures must be in place and appropriate safety training given to employees before working as a chokersetter or on a skyline-skidding operation, the company may be shown to be negligent when appropriate safety measures are not used. When guidelines are not followed, it may enable the surviving family to file a wrongful death lawsuit to recover damages.
