Fixing Fractures with Screws Made of Bone

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Bone Fracture Lawyer. There are many different types of fractures; however, a patient with an open bone fracture runs a serious risk of developing an infection, particularly if the patient requires surgery to fix their injuries. Many of these individuals require screws and plates to put their bones back together; however, if this equipment ends up getting infected, it could require a re-operation to clean out their surgical site. Now, there could be new screws that could reduce the risk of infection following surgical fixation.

Why are Screws and Plates Necessary?

When someone suffers traumatic injuries such as bone fractures in an auto accident, there are several different types that a patient could have. For example, a patient could have an open fracture, such as a femur fracture, that requires surgery to put back into place. While this is a great, temporary fix, the bones could shift out of place again, leading to reoperation and pain for the patient. Therefore, people could require screws and plates to immobilize the bones and hold them in place. This will facilitate the healing process yet could also require physical therapy and rehabilitation to restore function in an injured limb. While these screws and plates are made from different types of material, they typically stay in place for life.

The Benefits of Screws Made from Bone

Recently, a team of scientists developed screws that can be used to hold fractures together, such as humerus, hip, and tibia fractures, using screws made from bones. The benefit of using screws made from bones is that the bones are typed to match each patient. The patient’s body recognizes the bones as a healthy substance and there isn’t a risk of cross-reactivity with unmatched grafts. This means that there is a lower risk of infection and that the screws won’t need to be removed. Over time, the screws will fuse with the fracture site, another advantage over the traditional metal screws and plates.
