Fiery Truck Accident In Corning Causes Fatal Injuries

On Monday, November 2, 2020, one person was fatally injured as the result of a fiery truck accident in Corning. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the collision happened in the morning and indicated that it involved two vehicles, an SUV and a big-rig truck. Tehama County officials have identified the decedent as 33-year-old Brittnie Lahue of Redding. In addition to the decedent, one other person was injured during the accident.

Collision Details

CHP reported that the collision happened on Highway Interstate 5 near Liberal Avenue. At around 5:50 a.m., an SUV was heading north on I-5 while a big-rig was traveling south, approaching the location of the other vehicle. Witnesses to the accident reported that the SUV traveled over the highway median, entering the path of the oncoming truck. Authorities have indicated that they are not sure what caused the SUV driver to lose control of their vehicle.

The two vehicles crashed head-on, causing extreme damage to the SUV. As a result of the crash, the SUV caught fire. Officials indicated that the blaze eventually spread to vegetation in a field on the side of the highway.

Response

Responders were rushed to the scene directly after CHP was notified regarding the accident. When they arrived, they discovered that the SUV driver had suffered severe injuries. Sadly, the driver was pronounced deceased on-site. Additionally, the driver of the big rig was reported to have suffered minor trauma.

According to reports, firefighters at the scene were able to put the fire out before it threatened any nearby structures. According to the California Department of Transportation, the freeway was blocked to traffic while response was underway, leading to closures around one mile south of Liberal Avenue.

Investigation

The collision is currently under an active CHP investigation. However, officers involved with the investigation have not yet reported what, if any, factors they suspect could have caused the crash. In many cases, accidents like this one occur because of more than one cause and may also involve factors not the control of either driver like defective car parts.

The task of investigating a car accident can be difficult for police, especially when one or more drivers are unable to tell investigators about what happened from their perspective. Unfortunately, lacking driver testimony may lead police to leave important evidence unnoticed. When this happens, it can prevent families from being able to claim the compensation they need. Because of this, it’s critical that you have an experienced lawyer look into the crash privately.
