Fatal Vallejo Pedestrian Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo car accident lawyer. A recent collision involving a pedestrian on highway Interstate 80 in Vallejo left a Bay Area man with fatal injuries.

Accident Info

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), the CHP Golden Gate Communications Center began receiving calls just prior to 4 a.m. indicating that there was an injured pedestrian near the center divider on the eastbound side of I-80 west of the Georgia Street junction and over the overpass for Benicia Road.

CHP reported that the pedestrian had been struck while walking through the freeway by a GMC Sierra that had been driving in the number two lane. The driver of the GMC stopped at the scene of the accident and was one of the individuals who called in to report the incident.

Response

When responders arrived at the scene they found that the pedestrian had received major traumatic injuries and was lying on the shoulder of the freeway. When paramedics arrived, they pronounced the man deceased at the scene. The identity of the man has not yet been reported pending the notification of his next of kin.

We extend our condolences to the family of the man who passed away in this tragedy.

Additionally, it was reported that nobody besides the pedestrian received any injuries as a result of the accident and that no other vehicles were involved.

Investigation

Authorities are working to determine why the man had been walking in the freeway at the time of the accident, but have not stated any reasons so far. CHP has not made any comment regarding whether or not the pedestrian or vehicle driver were intoxicated.

Pedestrian Injuries

According to data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the total number of auto accident deaths in the United States fell by almost 18 percent from 2006 to 2015. However, during the same period of time, pedestrian fatalities rose by around 12 percent. An estimated 70,000 pedestrians are injured in the United States every year.

Pedestrian Injuries and Alcohol

Nearly half of all collisions that result in pedestrian fatalities involve alcohol in some way. One in three fatal pedestrian accidents involves a pedestrian with an illegally high blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Another 15 percent involve drivers with illegal BAC levels.

More Stats

  • Individuals aged over 64 account for about 19 percent of pedestrian fatalities and about 13 percent of pedestrian injuries.
  • Around 1 out of every 5 children fatally injured in auto accidents are pedestrians
  • Vehicles traveling at higher speeds are more likely to strike pedestrians and also tend to leave pedestrians with more severe injuries
  • The majority of pedestrian fatalities occur in urban areas at night, and in non-intersection locations.
