Fatal Train Accident Merced Ca

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced personal injury lawyer. An accident involving a motor vehicle and train took place near Merced during the morning hours of Sunday, August 13, 2017. The collision, unfortunately, caused one victim to suffer fatal injuries.

Accident Details

A 29-year-old Winton man was driving his red 2003 Honda Civic northwest along Santa Fe Drive at approximately 6:20 am. For unknown reasons, the motorist made a left turn onto Shaffer Road and into the direct path of an oncoming Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train. The train was unable to stop in time, resulting in a devastating train accident.

Investigators were informed by witnesses that the crossing’s safety arms for the train were down. However, the Winton man allegedly attempted to maneuver his car around the crossing arms. The impact from the train caused the Honda to sustain major damage and split the vehicle in half. The rear-end of the vehicle was found laying along the southern shoulder of Santa Fe Drive. The other half landed along the eastbound lane of Sante Fe Drive.

Was He Injured?

The Winton man was, unfortunately, pronounced deceased at the scene.

We would like to extend our condolences to the friends and family members of the man that passed away in this devastating train accident.

What Caused the Train Accident?

It is still too soon to determine a cause of the train accident. A Traffic Collision Report can take up to two weeks to be processed. A traffic report may sometimes be inconclusive pertaining to fault, leaving the loved ones of a deceased victim with many unanswered questions. It is critical, especially when a party has lost their life, to contact an experienced Merced personal injury lawyer who can investigate the collision scene and study the events leading up to the crash to pinpoint causation.

Loved One Forever Remembered

The Winton man was described as a family man that was strongly devoted to supporting his loved ones. He, sadly, leaves behind his wife, two children and stepchild. Family members have set up a GoFundMe account to cover the expenses of his funeral.
