Fatal Interstate 80 Crash Near Placer Hills Road Under Investigation

A fatal interstate 80 crash near Placer Hills Road is under investigation. One person was killed Tuesday night, May 26, 2026, in a crash involving a detached big rig trailer on Interstate 80 in Placer County, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Crash Happened Near Placer Hills Road

Authorities said the collision occurred around 11 p.m. on Interstate 80, westbound, near Placer Hills Road. Investigators reported that a semi-truck hauling a water tank trailer lost control and crashed into the center divider.

CHP said the tank trailer detached from the truck and crossed into the eastbound lanes, where it was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Pickup Driver Killed in Collision

The driver of the Ford pickup, identified only as an adult man from Colfax, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Officials have not yet publicly released his identity pending notification of next of kin.

Big Rig Driver Reportedly Fled Scene

According to a CHP spokesperson Officer, the driver of the big rig fled the scene following the collision. Authorities are actively attempting to locate the driver as the investigation continues.

Eastbound Interstate 80 near Placer Hills Road remained closed until approximately 4:30 a.m. Wednesday while emergency crews investigated the scene and cleared debris from the roadway.
