Madison Man Killed in Woodland Crash

A man from Madison, California was killed on Friday, August 4 near Woodland.

What Happened?

The man from Madison was driving along County Road 87 heading north in a 2002 Toyota. Simultaneously a woman from Yuba City who is 42-years-old was driving east on County Road 14. Both cars approached the intersection at the same time and collided together in a violent crash. The Nissan hit the Madison man in the Toyota on the left side of his vehicle.

The impact of the two cars caused injuries to both drivers. The man from Madison suffered more serious injuries and was taken to the Trauma Center at Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center. The woman from Yuba City who was driving the Nissan was also taken to Kaiser Permanente in Vacaville to treat her moderate and major injuries. While at the hospital, the man that was in the Toyota succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the reasons behind the crash. Officer Rodney Fitzhugh and other investigators do not believe that this happened as a result of driving drunk or under the influence of drugs.

Broadside Crashes

Broadside car accidents occur when the front or back of a vehicle hits another vehicle on its side. Other terms commonly used are a T-bone collision, right-angle collision, or side collisions. These types of accidents usually occur when one person fails to obey traffic signals or right of way laws such as not stopping at a stop sign or running a red light. This will put two vehicles who are on perpendicular paths into a potentially deadly situation.

In a right-angle crash, the driver and passengers of the vehicle which is struck on the side usually receive worse injuries. Engine Bays and trunk areas on the front and back of vehicles are engineered as crumple zones and can absorb a lot of damage and keep the occupants safer. Doors and pillars on the sides of vehicles are right next to those inside the car and do not provide as much protection from impacts. Curtain airbags are great at cushioning heads and other body parts from hitting the windows and doors. Vehicle safety has come a long way and is continually getting better.

Common injuries from T-bone collisions:

  • Head Injuries: concussions, skull fractures, cuts, and lacerations
  • Neck Injuries: cervical sprains and strains, herniated disk, cervical fractures, spinal cord damage
  • Back Injuries: herniated disk, spinal cord damage, herniated disk, muscle strains and/or spasms
  • Chest Injuries: broken ribs, punctured lungs, internal bleeding
  • Other Injuries: bone fracture, ligament tear, muscle tear, severe hematoma, and edema
