Fatal Accident Involving Horse Near Merced County

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced car accident lawyer. A man and a horse were involved in an accident near Merced County during the late evening hours of Monday, July 31, 2017. The collision, unfortunately, caused both victims to suffer fatal injuries.

I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to the grieving loved ones of the victim.

Accident Details

A man was driving his Honda Insight eastbound along Highway 52 in the vicinity of Highway 59 near Dos Palos at about 11:00 pm. For unknown reasons, a horse was loose on the highway. The driver of the Honda was unable to avoid the horse, which resulted in a serious collision. The impact propelled the horse over the roof of the vehicle and into the median of the roadway.

Were They Injured?

Sadly, the male motorist of the Honda and the horse were pronounced deceased at the scene.

What Caused the Accident?

A cause of the accident has not yet been determined. An investigation is ongoing. Authorities generally take seven to ten days to process a Traffic Collision Report. Officials are investigating whether speed or drunk driving played as factors in this collision. A traffic report may sometimes be inconclusive or contain error regarding fault. This may leave the family members of a victim with many unanswered questions. It is important, especially when a victim has suffered fatal injuries, to contact an experienced Merced personal injury lawyer who can conduct a solo investigation of the collision scene and study the list of events leading up to the crash to pinpoint liability.

Livestock and Animal Collisions

Automobile accidents involving animals and livestock can be very frightening. Horses and cows are large animals. When one of these animals strike a small vehicle, it can result in catastrophic injuries or even death to the occupants inside the car. Livestock and animal owners carry the duty to maintain proper control of their animals so they do not intrude onto roadways and present safety hazards to oncoming automobiles. Owners are also expected to securely fence their properties and adequately confine their animals to prevent such accidents from occurring.
