Fairfield Pedestrian Killed by Overturned Truck

A Fairfield man who had been standing on the shoulder of an on-ramp on Highway 70 in Yuba County lost his life on the afternoon of Monday, February 12, 2018, when a big rig truck hauling tons of gravel overturned and spilled its load across the roadway.

Accident Information
According to information provided in public reports by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident took place at approximately 1:15 p.m. as a 2016 Western Star big rig being driven by a 54-year-old woman from Grass Valley performed a left turn onto the Highway 70 on-ramp off of the westbound side of Erle Road in the area of Olivehurst.
A 46-year-old man from Fairfield, California had reportedly been standing on the right-hand shoulder of the on-ramp adjacent to his pickup truck, a Dodge Ram. While making the left-hand turn, the tractor-trailer overturned onto its right side and struck the man. Gravel reportedly spilled out of the trailer and struck his vehicle. A 17-year-old boy who had been in the passenger seat of the pickup truck at the time of the accident was reported to have not received any injuries.
Response and Injuries
Responding officers found that the man had sustained fatal injuries during the accident and declared him deceased at the scene. The man’s name has not yet been released to the public by county officials. The driver of the big rig was reported to have sustained moderately severe injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Rideout Memorial hospital to receive care.
