Fairfield Accident Statistics

I’m Ed Smith, a Fairfield personal injury lawyer. Fairfield is a busy city located about halfway between two of California’s largest urban areas, San Francisco and Sacramento. Those living in Fairfield enjoy easy access to many of Northern California’s most exciting areas as well as a bustling city life. However, Fairfield also has its share of injury-causing auto accidents. Residents may be interested in some of the statistics about Fairfield’s auto accidents below.

Accidents by Type

According to information compiled by researchers at UC Berkeley, the most common type of injury-causing accident that occurred in Fairfield over the past four years was rear-end collisions. In fact, rear-end collisions occurred almost twice as often as the second-most frequent type of injury collision, broadside collisions.

From most frequent to least frequent, the top five injury-causing accident types over the past four years in Fairfield have been rear end collisions at 40.9 percent, broadside collisions at 21 percent, hit object accidents at 12 percent, sideswipe accidents at 9.5 percent, and vehicle/pedestrian accidents at 5.6 percent.

Accidents by Severity

Since 2013, there has been a total of 2517 injury collisions involving 3597 injured individuals. Of these accidents, 34 involved a fatal injury, 126 involved a severe traumatic injury, 639 involved a visible injury, and 1,718 involved a complaint of pain from one or more passengers or pedestrians involved in the accident.

Common Violations

Injury-causing accidents aren’t always the fault of traffic violations. However, traffic violations do increase the risk of vehicle accidents and accidents usually present a risk of injury.

The most common violation that contributed to injury collisions in Fairfield over the past four years was speed limit violations. Speeding accounted for 38.9 percent of all of Fairfield’s injury-causing accident violations. Speeding is followed at a distance by improper turning, which made up 15.8 percent of the committed violations. After these come right of way violations at 13.1 percent and DUI violations at 6.4 percent.

Common Accident Conditions

Though accidents are liable to happen under various circumstances, certain accident trends can be pointed out. Here is some information about the conditions under which injury collisions happened most often:

  • Over the past four years in Fairfield, the majority of injury accidents occurred on Wednesdays and Fridays. These days accounted for about 17 percent of injury accidents each, which is almost 4 percent higher than average.
  • Only 38.9 percent of Fairfield’s injury accidents took place on a state highway while 61.1 percent took place somewhere within the city’s roadways.
  • 71 percent of injury accidents took place during daylight hours
  • About 88 percent of Fairfield’s injury accidents involved only regular passenger vehicles. Additionally, 3.7 percent involved bicycles, 6.6 percent involved pedestrians, 6.6 percent involved motorcycles, and 4.4 percent involved large trucks.
