Eureka Multi-vehicle Collision Causes Injuries

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. On Sunday, July 9, 2017, a Eureka multi-vehicle collision resulted in injuries that sent four of the involved individuals to a local hospital. Further information about this crash and more can be found below.

Accident Details

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred at around 10:35 a.m. near Murray Field, a census-designated place, a short distance north of Eureka. Officers reported that there had only been two vehicles involved in the collision; an old, small, blue pickup truck and a newer, black, four-door sedan.

Although CHP is still investigating the cause of the Eureka car accident, photos of the vehicles reveal that both received heavy damage to their front ends, suggesting that the vehicles may have collided head-on.

Emergency Response

Officers of CHP, Humboldt Bay Fire, and multiple emergency medical ambulances responded to the collision. Ultimately, four individuals were taken to a nearby hospital. Medical officials reported that one of these individuals had suffered moderate injuries and that the other three received minor injuries.

Resulting Traffic

The Eureka car accident initially caused all lanes of Highway 101 to be shut down. Reports indicated that the highway shutdown resulted in traffic that stretched all the way back into Eureka and that locals were attempting to bypass the traffic by using Jacobs Road to head north. The traffic reportedly lightened up at around 11 a.m. when one of the highway’s lanes was reopened.

Public Response to the Eureka Multi-Vehicle Collision

A number of residents took to social media to voice their concerns about accidents on Highway 101 between Eureka and Arcata. Some suggested that the road would be safer to drive if the bike lanes on the highway were removed to make space for a wider road. Others suggested that more signs are needed to warn motorists to reduce their speed and that the stretch of road, which is designated as a safety corridor by CalTrans, should be marked with flashing lights and obvious signage before drivers enter it.

Common Eureka Car Accidents

Eureka has its fair share of auto accidents and some types of collisions have proven to be more common than others. According to info compiled by researchers at UC Berkeley, the most common type of Eureka car accident to cause injury during 2013-2017 was broadside collisions. Broadside collisions made up over 43 percent of all of Eureka’s injury-involved car accidents. Additionally, broadside collisions were almost twice as common as the next most frequent accident type, rear-end accidents. Rear end crashes accounted for about 23 percent of Eureka car accidents.
