Eureka Man Dies in Del Norte Accident

On Friday, November 15, 2019, a Eureka man tragically passed away in an auto accident that took place in Del Norte County. According to officials from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident was a single-vehicle collision, and no other individuals were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the decedent’s identity, pending the notification of his next of kin. Additionally, the accident remained under investigation at the time of reporting.

Crash Information

Police indicated that the accident took place at around 11:18 p.m. on US Highway 101 north of Damnation Creek. At this time, a man was driving a 2006 Toyota Prius northbound toward Crescent City near milepost 16.82. For reasons that investigators say they do not currently understand, the vehicle drifted east and eventually off the road. After exiting the road, the Prius continued down a steep embankment and crashed into a large tree.

Officers responding to the accident found the driver with major injuries. Tragically, he was declared deceased on-site. According to reports, one-way traffic control was conducted on Highway 101 for around 90 minutes, while accident response and initial investigations were underway.

Investigating Fatal Accidents

The process of investigating a car accident can be complicated, and when involved drivers pass away, it can be very hard for police to get a complete picture of what took place. Many times, this means that key factors such as faulty vehicle products or hazardous roads aren’t noticed during investigation. For this reason, it’s important to speak with an attorney who knows how to conduct their own accident investigation. Your lawyer should be able to put the effort and resources into the investigation that you and your family deserve in order to determine whether or not any negligence was involved in the crash.

Wrongful Death Damages

The damages that families suffer after fatal accidents can be difficult to truly define. The loss of a person that you love isn’t easy to deal with and significantly changes peoples’ lives. For this reason, wrongful death claims include two major types of compensation, economic and non-economic.

Economic damages include anything that can easily be given a price tag. For example, medical bills, lost income, property damage, and loss of household services are all economic damages. Non-economic losses, sometimes referred to as pain and suffering damages, account for things that can’t be given a dollar value. These include things like loss of parental guidance, emotional support, companionship, and more. A good attorney will be able to make sure that you are compensated holistically for what you’ve lost.
