Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash in Elk Grove

A motor vehicle crash in Elk Grove on May 31 caused the accident fatality of one man after his car struck a tree. The accident was reported by a spokesperson for the Elk Grove Police Department, who said it happened around 3:08 in the afternoon on westbound Laguna Boulevard, heading toward Bruceville Road. The driver, in a Honda Accord, crossed over the median into the opposing lane and tried to correct to reenter his lane. However, while making that maneuver, the vehicle struck a tree. The driver died in the crash.

Further Details of Accident Fatality

The police spokesperson, Jason Jimenez, said that speed appeared to contribute to the crash. Whether drugs or alcohol was an influence in the accident is unknown at this time. The accident is being investigated by Elk Grove police to determine what happened to cause the collision.

Causes of a Single-Vehicle Accident Fatality

Most single-vehicle crashes are caused by driver error. However, at times, outside influence is responsible for the accident fatality. A careful and thorough investigation by an experienced lawyer can uncover the real reason for the death. Some of the ways an outside influence can cause a single-vehicle crash include:

  • A hit and run or aggressive driver can force a vehicle off the road, leading to an accident fatality.
  • Poor road maintenance or design can lead to a collision. It may be caused by a poorly designed road or intersection, weak or missing guardrails, defective traffic lights, and many other causes. The government agency tasked with maintenance and design can be held liable in these cases.
  • An auto defect to the brakes, accelerator or steering column can cause an accident. In these cases, a product liability claim may be made against the manufacturer, distributor and others.

Investigating a Single-Vehicle Crash

Our law office has a great deal of experience in accident investigation, which helps grieving families obtain compensation through a wrongful death claim. The investigators go right away to the accident site and gather the evidence needed to support the claim, beginning with talking to any witnesses and reviewing the police report for accuracy. In addition, they do the following:

  • Perform accident reconstruction
  • Search the area for video footage of the accident from business and traffic surveillance cameras
  • Check for problems with road maintenance
  • Look for a debris field that may indicate the presence of another motorist

When the evidence is compiled, our lawyers use it to prepare a strong claim that benefits our client. It is used when negotiating with the insurance company or preparing a case to present in court.

Being Supportive After a Death

Losing a loved one is a terrible experience, and the grief is only compounded when the loss was because of a preventable accident. Friends and loved ones can help and offer their support to assist the family in their time of need. When someone is grief-stricken, there are ways to lend a helping hand and help a friend or loved one during this period. Some suggestions are:

  • Acknowledge that the person died by expressing your sympathy. This opens a way for the grieving person to start speaking about their loss. Being a good listener is a way for them to start letting their emotions out.
  • Send over food or take the bereaved person out to eat. Getting out of the house is healthy for them to remember that life is still going on around them.
  • Help by washing dishes, mowing the lawn, offering to take the children to school or an outing, or whatever else would be useful.
  • Ask the family member how they feel and be accepting of it. A person who is grieving goes through a stage of emotions from unacceptance to anger, disbelief, sorrow, and finally, acceptance.
  • Help with funeral arrangements. This difficult task can be a little easier if someone is along to provide emotional support.
