Pedestrian Accident Kills Sacramento Man

A pedestrian fatality occurred early in the morning on December 9 in the Southgate area of Florin in South Sacramento. A male pedestrian, identified as Yia Thao, 36, a resident of Sacramento, was struck by an SUV. The accident occurred shortly after 5:00 in the morning, where 55th Street intersects with Florin Road in Parkway Estates near Highway 99, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) report. The vehicle driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with the police. Florin Road in the area of the pedestrian fatality remained closed while an investigation was conducted into the cause of the accident and reopened around 7:00 a.m.

Losing a Loved One Unexpectedly in a Pedestrian Fatality

Losing a loved one unexpectedly can cause family members an overwhelming sense of grief or loss. While all deaths, expected or not, are traumatic, sudden deaths are even more emotionally and physically draining. Not everyone experiences the same feelings after the sudden loss of a loved one, however, the following are common:

  • Shock: This is often exhibited along with a profound sense of disbelief. The person may scream or shake and refuse to eat, sleep, or drink.
  • Physical symptoms such as:
    • Gastrointestinal problems
    • Heart palpitations
    • Exhaustion
    • Agitation

Providing Support for Bereaved Family Members

There are things that can be done to protect and support the grieving person:

  • Basic needs: Make sure that the person is eating and drinking fluids properly to meet their bodily requirements.
  • Safety: Shock can leave a person defenseless against accidents. It is better to drive them to appointments and providing meals for them rather than letting them do it themselves.
  • Cover responsibilities: Many people have dependants they care for. In the initial period after a fatality, they may be unable to cope with this properly. Helping with children, elderly parents, or pets are all helpful acts.
  • Keep the bereaved abreast of events in their loved one’s death, providing them with the information they need to process it. Their family physician can advise you of the amount and type of information that is proper, depending on their physical and emotional state.
  • Help them through end-of-life decisions such as burial clothes and methods.
  • Make sure they are taking their prescription medications as directed. If they are close to running out, pick up a refill at the pharmacy.

What an Attorney Can Do to Help After a Pedestrian Fatality

At our firm, we empathize with the grief loved ones feel after a family member dies. Most of us have experienced this, and we work hard to take the burden of legal matters off your hands. Once retained, we speak with insurers about the accident in your stead and investigate the wrongful death as to fault. Our investigators speak with witnesses who saw the accident happen and obtain video footage from traffic surveillance and security cameras on businesses. The investigators also review the police report of the incident for errors since this record is widely used in court and during insurance negotiations. In some cases, we also use accident reconstruction techniques to determine how and why the crash occurred to establish negligence. Once all this information is gathered, our attorneys use it to build a strong wrongful death case.
