DUI Driver Collides with School Bus Near Stevinson

I’m Ed Smith, a Turlock car accident lawyer. A driver backed into a school bus carrying more than 30 students near Stevinson during the afternoon of Thursday, August 24, 2017. The motorist was later detained on suspicion of driving under the influence.

What Happened?

A 55-year-old Gustine man was exiting the Stevinson Bar and Grill at approximately 3:40pm. The man entered his black 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche and began reversing his vehicle onto Third Avenue at an estimated speed of 20 miles per hour. At the same time, a school bus was traveling westbound along Third Avenue. The man allegedly backed his vehicle into the right side of the bus, causing nearly 12 feet of damage along its side. Thanks to the quick thinking and evasive action of the bus driver, they managed to save the young children from a more serious collision.

Authorities Detain Gustine Man

Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) were dispatched to the scene of the school bus accident. When they arrived, they located the Gustine man. Authorities suspected drunk driving may have played a role in the crash and conducted a field sobriety test on the man. The exam concluded that he was intoxicated. He was later detained on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Was Anybody Injured?

According to CHP, no one on the school bus suffered injuries resulting from the collision. A second bus was called to the scene to transport the students to a local school where they were picked up by their parents.

School Bus Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a school bus has been found as the most safest method of transportation for a child when compared to traveling by vehicle. Students traveling in a school bus are 70 times more likely to arrive at school safely rather than car. However, this does not mean school bus accidents never occur. Approximately four to six school-age children pass away in school transportation vehicle accidents per year, which accounts to less than one percent of all traffic fatalities.
