Lincoln DUI Crashes

Auto accidents happen every day and for a multitude of reasons. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reports that driving while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances is causing more and more accidents, and is directly related to an increase of fatal accidents across the U.S. during recent years.

The city of Lincoln is, no exception and has been the site of numerous injury-related DUI auto accidents over the last decade. This blog will explore some statistics related to Lincoln auto accidents and how driving under the influence affects them.

DUI Overview

In the time period between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2016, Lincoln, California was the site of 676 car accidents that resulted in 922 traumatic injuries. 56 of these accidents involved drivers under the influence of intoxicants.

Of the 56 traumatic DUI accidents, 5 involved a motorcycle, 1 involved a pedestrian, and 15 (over one-quarter) occurred on a highway within the city. The large majority of these collisions took place during Friday-Sunday and usually between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m during the night.

Crash Severity

Lincoln’s DUI auto accidents have been dramatically more severe than accidents not involving impaired drivers that occurred in the city during the same period of time. Over 7 percent of the 56 injury-related DUI collisions resulted in the loss of life, while only around 1.5 percent of non-DUI accidents were fatal. This data shows that, in Lincoln, DUI crashes have been over four times as likely to involve a fatality.

The numbers regarding severe injury accidents tell a similar story, with collisions involving impaired drivers causing around 3 times the rate of severe injuries compared to non-DUI accidents.

Collision Type

DUI collisions in Lincoln have most often been hit-object accidents in which a motorist strikes a stationary object or parked vehicle. These types of accidents accounted for nearly half (46.43 percent) of the accidents in question. After hit-object accidents, the most common crash types were, in order from most frequent to least frequent, rear-end, broadside, and rollover accidents. Less common collision types included sideswipe, head-on, and vehicle/pedestrian accidents.

In contrast, the most common accident type for non-DUI collisions was rear-ended accidents at 29.44 percent with broadside accidents following close behind at 28.40 percent.
