Statistics on DUI Accidents in Davis

The holidays are upon us, which means many people are hitting the road in order to visit family and friends near and far. While holiday trips bring lots of joy and cheer, they also come along with an increased risk of being involved in a DUI car accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a higher volume of travel, as well as an increased number of intoxicated drivers, make roadways more dangerous than usual during the holiday season. Those who spend time driving on Davis roads may want to learn the following statistics on DUI accidents in Davis.

Collisions Overview

Data from UC Berkeley research groups show that 2,221 traumatic vehicle accidents were reported in the city of Davis between 2007 and 2019. These 2,221 collisions involved 216 (about ten percent) DUI crashes. Out of these 216 accidents, 13 involved pedestrians, two were motorcycle collisions, and 66 involved a cyclist. Furthermore, around one-quarter of DUIs happened on a highway while the rest took place on municipal roads.

Severity

While DUI crashes only accounted for about ten percent of collisions in general, more than one-third of fatal crashes in Davis involved a drunk driver. Furthermore, collisions involving DUI had a fatality rate of more than triple that of collisions overall. Accidents involving severe injuries followed the same trend, with collisions involving a DUI driver being more than twice as likely to cause major trauma.

Time and Location

By far, the highest number of DUI accidents in Davis took place between 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays to 3:00 a.m. on Sundays. During this period, the majority of accidents happen between 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., especially after midnight.

DUI collisions happen all over Davis, especially in the Downtown area. However, a few other hotspots include:

  • I-80 near Cowell Boulevard
  • Covell Boulevard at Anderson Road
  • Highway 113 Between Covell and Russell Boulevards
  • I-80 near Mace Boulevard

DUI and Liability

When drivers make the decision to operate their vehicle while under the influence, they knowingly put themselves and other people in danger. Because of this, DUI drivers are considered negligent in the event of a crash, meaning that they can be held liable for damages that were caused by the collision. These damages can include property damage, medical expenses, lost income, and more.
