Driver Hospitalized Following Multiple Collision

Driver Hurt in Multiple Car Accident

A multiple collision occurred in Sacramento on September 7, 2018, and resulted in the hospitalization of one person. According to a report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident involved two vehicles and two semis. Two of the vehicles had to be towed from the accident scene following the crash. The incident is under investigation by the CHP.

Accident Details

The accident happened along Interstate 80 eastbound near Greenback Lane shortly after 2:30 in the afternoon, leaving the roadway filled with debris. One individual was reported as being injured and was taken to the Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. The nature of the person’s injury has yet to be released by authorities.

A Multiple Collision on the Highway

Major collisions on thoroughfares often result in fatalities. This is largely due to the speed limit on freeways and changes in traffic flow from one area to another. Often, areas of low visibility lend themselves to an increase in the occurrence of a multiple car collision. The biggest problem motorists must face is driver error at highway speeds. Changing lanes erratically has become normal fare on freeways. Once an initial collision happens, additional vehicles are forced into braking or swerving, causing even more accidents.

Specific Dangers of a Multiple Collision

A particularly dangerous situation occurs when an accident with multiple vehicles happens. After a vehicle is initially struck, the airbag will discharge. However, a vehicle is likely to be struck several times, and the already discharged airbag is useless in providing protection. Also, vehicles often sustain damage to their sides where less protection is available. Due to the close proximity of vehicles in a multiple collision, it is difficult for survivors to be extracted and cared for effectively.

Fires in a Multiple Collision

Fires in a traffic accident can cause devastating injuries. When a fire erupts in one part of a multiple car accident, it spreads quickly due to leaking gasoline. The worst-case scenario is when a truck carrying volatile chemicals or liquids is involved. It is also difficult for firefighters to be able to make their way to extinguish the blaze. The roadway itself can be damaged as melting takes place due to the intense temperatures. The presence of a fire in a multiple vehicle collision in a tunnel presents the most violent outcome to travelers.

Injuries in a Multiple Collision

The types of injuries suffered in this type of accident are:

  • Traumatic head injury: The impacts of a multiple collision set the stage for traumatic head injuries.
  • Burns: Fire occurs more frequently in accidents with multiple vehicles, particularly if big rigs are involved. Burns can require extensive care, including surgery.
  • Chest trauma: This type of injury can be repeated several times as more than one vehicle slams into another. Side collisions are particularly dangerous since the average amount of protection is less stringent.
  • Fractures: Serious fractures are common in a multiple collision. Pelvic and femur fractures are serious injuries and often require surgery to repair effectively.
  • Abdominal trauma: When a vehicle sustains multiple hits, the driver or passengers often suffer abdominal injuries. Such injuries can lead to hemorrhage and subsequent death if the individual is not rescued quickly.
