Driver Hospitalized After Chico Area Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Chico personal injury lawyer. A head-on collision occurred outside of Chico on the morning of Monday, March 26, 2018. Unfortunately, the accident caused one party to be hospitalized with serious injuries.

Accident Details

Information provided by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that a car accident happened along Highway 99 near the small community of Vina, just north of Chico. CHP officers reported that a black-colored 1994 Infiniti sedan driven by a 21-year-old Corning woman had been turning south onto the highway at the intersection of Rowles Road at approximately 11:40 am. While navigating the turn, the Infiniti collided head-on with a southbound 2008 Acura SUV driven by an 88-year-old Chico resident. The impact of the collision allegedly caused the Infiniti to lose control and land off of the roadway nearly 40 feet away from the initial accident scene. Photographs taken at the scene suggest that the Infiniti had partially submerged in a roadside puddle with its bumper detached.

Response

After receiving notification about the accident, CHP dispatch sent emergency responders to the scene. Paramedics reported that the Infiniti driver was experiencing significant back pain following the collision and transported them via ground ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. Officials reported that the Acura driver and their passenger escaped serious injuries in the accident. Furthermore, no additional individuals or vehicles were involved in the crash.

Spinal Trauma

Injuries to the spinal column can be extremely painful and have the potential to seriously affect one’s ability to function normally in their daily lives. The types of spinal cord injuries (SCIs) include:

  • Contusions: bruising of the spinal cord
  • Compression: caused by excessive pressure on the spinal column
  • Laceration: the tearing or severing of spinal nerve fibers
  • Central Cord Syndrome: damage specifically sustained by the corticospinal tracts in the spinal cord’s cervical region
  • Paralysis: loss of control over voluntary movement and muscles

Individuals who have suffered an SCI oftentimes have a long path to recovery. Lost wages and medical bills can be compounded by ongoing rehabilitation and other costs. If you or someone you love has suffered an SCI following an accident, it is important to discuss your available options with an experienced personal injury lawyer in Chico.
