Dixon Crash Fatally Injures One

I’m Ed Smith, a Dixon car accident lawyer. On Saturday, February 18, 2017, a single-vehicle accident at the northeast end of Dixon resulted in the death of a possible DUI driver.

Accident Details

The accident occurred at about 2 in the morning near the transition road between Highway 113 heading north and the westbound side of Interstate 80. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the driver was a 44-year-old male from Winters and had been driving a BMW when he apparently lost control of the car, drove off of the roadway, and collided head-on with a tree.

Injuries and Response

Medical officials who responded to the incident reported that when they arrived at the scene of the accident, the man was appeared to be unconscious and was pinned inside the wreckage of his vehicle. After a complicated extrication that took over three hours, paramedics declared the victim of the crash dead on-scene. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and no other cars were involved in the accident. The first lane of the roadway was closed during the extrication and for some time after until the wreckage was cleared and the vehicle towed.

Possible Causes

CHP mentioned in their report that alcohol likely played a role in the accident. A witness indicated that the vehicle had apparently driven off of the roadway for no apparent reason. It is possible that driving while intoxicated caused the motorist to fall asleep at the wheel or become distracted.

Drunk Driving

Driving under the influence is responsible for almost one-third of all car accident deaths across the nation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2010 alone, the estimated cost of lost productivity, workplace losses, legal and court expenses, medical costs, emergency medical services, insurance administration, congestion, and property damage due to accidents in which alcohol and/or drugs played a part was around 44 billion dollars. The NHTSA also noted that if this figure was to include the relatively intangible lost quality-of-life that results from car injuries and the loss of loved ones, it might be estimated that drunk driving’s total societal cost is around 200 billion dollars per year.

Staying Safe

The NHTSA reported that the rate DUI among drivers that were involved in fatal collisions in 2014 was almost 4 times higher during the night than in the day and that, compared to 16 percent on weekdays, 29 percent of motorists involved in crashes on weekends were found to be alcohol-impaired. When driving around at night, and especially on weekends, it is important to keep an eye out for drivers who may not be totally in control of their vehicles.
