Small Plane Crashes Into Arcata Bay

On Thursday, February 6, 2020, a small plane crashed into Arcata Bay. According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place during the morning and left one person with injuries necessitating hospitalization. The pilot was reportedly the only person on board the plane at the time of the crash and was expected to recover from his injuries.

Incident Information

The plane was identified as a single-engine Cessna 208B that belongs to Redding Aero Enterprises. According to flight logs, the aircraft had left Sacramento at around 6:00 a.m. and was scheduled to land at AVC just before 7:00 a.m. The plane reportedly went down just outside of Arcata, a short distance east of Woodley Island, landing upside-down in a mudflat.

So far, no details about what caused the plane to crash have been reported.

Response

According to reports, the pilot was able to extricate himself from the wreck and called the accident into 911 himself. Agencies responding to the call for help included officials from the Coast Guard as well as the Humboldt Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department.

Responders had a difficult time finding the wreck due to heavy fog in the bay and initially established a command post on Wooley Island. Just before 8:00 a.m., crews were able to locate the plane and recovered the pilot using a Coast Guard helicopter. The man was taken to St. Joseph hospital for emergency care. Responders indicated that the pilot was alert and conscious when they found him.

Removing the Wreck from Arcata Bay

After the emergency response was complete, Sheriff’s Office Deputies reportedly began fishing numerous packages that the plane had been carrying out of the water. The latest reports indicated that officials were having a difficult time figuring out how to remove the plane from the bay. A vessel attached an anchor to the wrecked craft, and officials were considering contacting the National Transportation Safety Board about the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration will reportedly be conducting an investigation into this crash.

Accidents and Injuries

Plane accidents are often very severe. Because planes travel at such high speeds and can do very little to minimize the impact of a collision compared to cars, survivors often suffer serious injuries that have a huge impact on their lives. In many cases, the effects of these injuries can leave people unable to continue working or participating in activities that they care about.

On top of being unable to work either temporarily or permanently, crash survivors are also often left with very steep medical bills and need to continue paying for things like medications and therapy in order to recover. In many cases, survivors are unsure of how they will be able to afford their recovery.
