Cyclist Killed in Chico Highway Collision

California Highway Patrol reported that a cyclist suffered fatal injuries during a Chico highway collision that occurred on Saturday, June 20, 2020. The Butte County Sheriff’s Department is currently withholding the identity of the decedent until their family is notified. California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the incident happened on a local highway in the morning and involved a cyclist as well as a pickup truck.

Crash Information

The crash happened at around 9:42 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 32 and Meridian Road. The cyclist had been riding north on Meridian toward the intersection while a 2003 Dodge pickup truck was driving west on CA-32, approaching the same location. CHP indicated that the cyclist entered the intersection and was struck head-on by the pickup truck.

Response

Emergency personnel were immediately sent to the crash scene after CHP dispatch was alerted to the accident. When responders arrived, they found the cyclist was critically injured. Sadly, the individual passed away on-site. According to reports, no other individuals were injured during the accident, and the truck driver remained at the accident scene to cooperate with responders.

Investigation

CHP has reported that they do not currently know what factors caused this crash and officers are currently conducting an investigation into the incident. However, investigators have stated that they do not believe intoxication to have played a role in the accident. In many cases, vehicle accidents involving cyclists happen because of things that neither drivers nor cyclists can control. These factors can include things like poorly made or defective bicycle or vehicle parts, dangerous roads, and more.

The Impact of a Deadly Crash

Families who have lost somebody in a deadly accident often experience an immense amount of grief, and coping with such a traumatic loss can be very difficult. After a sudden, deadly accident, it’s common for people to feel overwhelmed and unable to keep up with their daily lives while they are processing their grief. It’s important to do what you can to take care of yourself and your loved ones during these times and to make sure that you seek support from people in your friend group, family, and community.

Unfortunately, many people are not able to truly focus on grieving because their loss has also caused major financial problems. A sudden death in the family can leave your household without a crucial source of income and/or valuable services like cleaning, childcare, home maintenance, and more.

Getting Help

Thankfully, it’s often possible for families to get help. This can be accomplished through filing a wrongful death claim with the help of an expert attorney. By holding at-fault parties liable for their losses, families are often able to obtain the funds they need to have financial security and move on with their lives after suffering such a tragic loss.
