Vacaville Man Killed in Car Crash

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 19, 2021, a 51-year-old man was killed in a car crash near the intersection of Foxboro Parkway and Peabody Road in Vacaville, California. The Solano County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Gary Copeland, a Vacaville resident.

According to Vacaville police, the incident happened at around 2:45 p.m. near the entrance to California State Prison Solano, located on Peabody Road in the 2100 block.

The Aftermath of the Accident

The crash necessitated the closing of the roads near the scene for several hours. Up to ten patrol vehicles responded to the scene, in addition to a number of Vacaville Fire Department rigs. Traffic on Peabody Road in the area of the accident was shut down for around four hours while investigators gathered evidence and officials attended to the scene.

The Investigation is Continuing

Officials reveal that the nature and the cause of the crash remain unclear and the investigation will be continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Sousa at (707) 410-7502.

What Happens in a Car Accident Investigation?

After a car accident happens, especially if it involves serious injuries or a fatality, police officers will usually complete a thorough crash scene investigation. That may involve taking photographs, interviewing witnesses, and taking statements from the parties involved in the accident. Often, it will include talking with nearby residents and businesses to see if they had cameras operating that may have captured the incident and/or the events leading up to the crash. Even the most thorough investigation, however, may not lead to the discovery of all the pertinent details. Sometimes, the true cause of a car crash is never truly determined.

Determining the Cause of a Car Crash

If a car crash gives rise to a legal matter, such as a personal injury case, it is important to determine the cause of the accident in order to identify who was at fault. The person who caused the accident will be financially responsible for any injuries that they caused. If the police investigation fails to determine fault in the accident, there are other methods an attorney may take to try to determine who was at fault, and therefore liable, in the accident.  One such method is known as accident reconstruction.

What is Accident Reconstruction?

An accident reconstruction expert may be hired to figure out how and why a car crash happened. An accident reconstructionist will use scientific methodology to figure out the mechanics, circumstances, and other contributing factors that resulted in a collision. The art of accident reconstruction involves a number of disciplines including but not limited to mathematics, physics, and vehicle dynamics.  Several computer applications are used to calculate the answers to a number of questions, such as:

  • What was the vehicle’s speed at impact?
  • How much did the vehicle slow during braking?
  • What was the angle at which the vehicles collided?
