Crash Kills Elk Grove Mother, Children

I’m Ed Smith, an Elk Grove car accident lawyer.  An accident in the vicinity of Rosemont on March 27, 2017, claimed the life of a 31-year-old woman from Elk Grove and her two children. The woman and her minor son, who was seated in the front, were killed by the crash. The woman’s baby, riding in the backseat, suffered serious injuries and was on life support at UC Davis before succumbing to his injuries.

What Happened

The crash occurred on Monday at about 3:00 a.m., when the woman, driving a Honda Accord east on Jackson Highway (Highway 16) around Mayhew Road in the Rosemont area, veered into the lane of an oncoming white van. The van driver reported to the California Highway Patrol that he attempted to stop and avoid the oncoming vehicle but to no avail, and the two vehicles collided with each other head-on.

Honda Occupants Did Not Use Restraints

According to a statement made by a CHP spokesman, none the occupants of the Honda were utilizing seat belts or restraints at the time of the crash. One CHP officer reported that the impact of the crash was violent. The van driver allegedly had minor injuries and was DUI tested at the scene. The CHP is conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident, and results are pending at the time this article was written.

Major Causes of Head-On Collisions

This type of collision is particularly dangerous on a highway because both vehicles are probably traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of impact. Not wearing a seat belt not only increases the likelihood of serious injury or death from an accident but also increases the likelihood that an individual may be ejected from the vehicle. Many head-on collisions are caused by negligence. Some of the reasons may be due to fatigued or distracted driving, incautious passing, particularly on rural roads, third-party drivers or road hazards. Drunk drivers are also a major cause of head-on collisions because their impairment inhibits their response time and their ability to use good judgment. Accidents where a driver enters a freeway going in the wrong direction or down a one-way street the wrong way are frequently caused by drunk drivers.
