Fatal Crash in Shasta County Claims Lives of Mother and Child

A fatal crash in Shasta County claims lives of mother and child. On Monday morning, September 15, 2025, just after 5 a.m., a tragic single-vehicle accident occurred in Shasta County which claimed the lives of two people

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a 40-year-old woman and an 8-year-old child, both residents of Paynes Creek, were killed in the crash.

Details of the Accident

The crash happened on Wildcat Road east of Rancheria Creek Road in Manton. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver, identified as Potter, was traveling in a 1992 Ford Explorer when the SUV veered off a remote roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. The vehicle went down an embankment, resulting in fatal injuries to both victims.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene but were unable to save the occupants. Authorities continue to investigate what may have caused the SUV to leave the roadway, including possible mechanical failure, roadway conditions, or driver-related factors.

Single-Vehicle Accidents in Rural Areas

Single-vehicle crashes are not uncommon on rural or remote roads, where lighting, sharp turns, and embankments can create dangerous driving conditions. Older vehicles, such as the SUV involved in this crash, may also present additional safety concerns if mechanical issues go undetected.

Drivers on rural roadways should take extra precautions, including:

  • Reducing speed in areas with sharp curves or steep grades.
  • Ensuring vehicles are regularly maintained, especially older models.
  • Remaining alert to changing road and weather conditions.
