A Covelo fatal pedestrian accident on State Route 162 is under investigation after a hit-and-run crash claimed the life of a person in the road. The accident occurred on the evening of October 12, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). At approximately 7:59 p.m., CHP officers were dispatched to the area north of Poonkinney Road following reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision. 

Witnesses Report Walker Was in Traffic Lane at Covelo Fatal Pedestrian Accident

Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures but tragically pronounced the pedestrian deceased at the scene. Authorities closed S.R.162 for roughly four and a half hours to investigate the incident. Witnesses told investigators that the pedestrian was walking within the southbound traffic lane when a Toyota 4Runner, driven by a 20-year-old Covelo resident, struck the individual and continued southbound without stopping. 

Vehicle Located That Fled the Scene

Around 9:48 p.m., the communications center received a call from a family member of the driver to report the crash. CHP officers, assisted by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, met with the driver at his residence. The involved vehicle was located, and Deloera was interviewed by authorities.

Deceased Pedestrian’s Identity to Be Released

The identity of the deceased pedestrian has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. CHP’s Garberville Area Office continues to investigate the Covelo fatal pedestrian accident.
