Child Dies Following SUV Crash Into American River Near Placerville

A five-year-old child dies following SUV crash into American River on Tuesday afternoon, May 26, 2026, in which the vehicle plunged into the American River near Placerville, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Crash Happened Along Highway 50 Near Ice House Road

CHP officials said the collision occurred on eastbound Highway 50 just east of Ice House Road. Investigators reported that a Hyundai SUV traveling eastbound veered off the roadway and crashed into the American River.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants and provide medical aid.

Woman Killed at Scene, Children Seriously Injured

Authorities said two children, a 5-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy, were seated in the back of the SUV and suffered serious injuries in the crash. Both children were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials later confirmed that the 5-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries.

The front-seat passengers were identified as 41-year-old Matthew Fife, who was driving the SUV, and 35-year-old Maria Fife. CHP said Maria Fife died at the scene, while Matthew Fife suffered minor injuries.

Authorities continue investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and enter the river. Additional details surrounding the collision have not yet been released.
