Chico Driver Charged with Manslaughter After Fatal Collision

On Saturday, April 20, 2019, a woman from Chico was placed under arrest on charges of manslaughter after she was involved in a local car accident. Authorities of California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the accident left one person with fatal injuries. The fatally injured individual was identified a by Butte County officials a day earlier as Virgil Santos, a 64-year-old man from Chico. My condolences are sent out to Mr. Santos’ loved ones as they are enduring this difficult period of time.

Crash Information

The accident happened at around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2019. The Chico woman had been driving on East Avenue in Chico in a black 2007 Toyota Prius heading toward the intersection of Marigold Avenue. Police say that the woman was driving at a high rate of speed. At the same time, Mr. Santos and his wife were driving northbound on Marigold in their 2019 Honda Accord.

Santos reportedly stopped his vehicle at a red light inside of the left-hand turn lane at the East Avenue/Marigold intersection. When the light turned Green, Santos let cross traffic pass before attempting to turn left to enter the westbound lane of East Avenue. Officers reported that the Toyota sped through the red light at the East Avenue/Marigold intersection and struck the left-hand side of the front of the Accord. After this, the Toyota careened into a third vehicle before it finally stopped on the northern curbside of East Avenue.

Response

When responders arrived at the crash site, they discovered that Mr. and Mrs. Santos were both seriously injured. The couple was rushed to the Enloe Medical Center for immediate care. Tragically, Mr. Santos passed away in hospital custody. Updates on Mrs. Santos’ condition have not been reported.

The driver of the Toyota was also significantly injured. She was taken to Enloe hospital for treatment. At the hospital, police placed her under arrest for driving under the influence leading to fatal injuries. According to reports, the Chico Police Department (CPD) Major Accident Investigation Team is still investigating the crash.
