Chain Reaction Crash on Adobe Road

On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 21, 2021, a female passenger riding in a Chevrolet Volt was fatally injured in a Lakeville crash. The collisions were initiated when a pickup truck struck the rear of another pickup, which sent the second truck veering into oncoming traffic, according to a representative from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Further Details of the Lakeville Crash

Reports of the chain-reaction crash were received just after 4:30 p.m. The crash site was Adobe Road, west of Stage Gulch Road. The initial crash was between a Chevrolet Colorado, driven by a 78-year-old Sonoma resident who rear-ended a Chevrolet Silverado, which was being driven by a 51-year old resident of Napa. Both trucks had been traveling east on Adobe Road. The impact from the initial collision sent the Silverado into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane. It collided with a Chevrolet Volt.

Lakeville Crash Caused Multiple Injuries and a Fatality

Both the drivers of the Silverado and the Volt sustained major injuries. They were airlifted to a nearby hospital, according to officials. The man who had been driving the Chevy Colorado was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Sadly, the female passenger of the Chevy Volt was killed in the crash. Her name has not yet been released, pending notification of her family.

Road Closure Followed the Incident

The crash investigation necessitated road closures in the area for more than three hours on Wednesday evening. Adobe Road was re-opened by the CHP shortly after 8:00 p.m.

What is a Chain Reaction Accident?

A chain-reaction car crash involves three or more vehicles. Though it does not appear to be the case in this Lakeville crash, sometimes, in a chain-reaction accident, more than one person may be at fault. Additionally, because of the multiple impacts, the likelihood of several injured parties is higher.

What Causes a Chain Reaction Accident?

Chain reaction crashes are more likely to occur in areas with a high traffic volume. Other factors that may lead to such an accident include:

  • Poor weather or visibility conditions
  • Excessive speed
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Distracted or drowsy driving

Determining Fault in a Chain Reaction Crash

Some multi-car crashes may present complex questions of liability (fault), while others are fairly simple to determine the cause. Wednesday’s Lakeville accident appears to have been the fault of the 78-year old driver of the Chevy Colorado, who rear-ended the Chevy Silverado. Although it is not impossible that some small percentage of fault may be assigned to the driver of the Silverado, there is not a whole lot one can do to stop their vehicle from reacting to a violent impact.
