Highway 99 Fatality Reported in Cedar Pass Collision

A woman was killed in a traffic accident on November 3 by a Cedar Pass collision along Highway 299. The accident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. northeast of Redding, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers who responded to the call. It was reported that a Chevrolet tow truck driven by a 44-year-old man was going west on Highway 299 at the same time the driver of a GMC Sierra, a woman, age 70, was heading east.

The tow truck driver allegedly drifted off the roadway and onto the shoulder at a curve. When he steered back onto the road, he lost control of his vehicle, passed into the opposing lane, and struck the pickup. Major damage occurred to both of the vehicles.

Older Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Cedar Pass Collision

The female pickup driver was fatally injured in the crash. The tow truck driver suffered moderate injuries and was taken by air to Redding’s Mercy Medical Center. Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to factor into the cause of the collision. The CHP traffic accident investigators are working toward determining exactly what happened to cause the fatal crash.

Wrongful Death Claims

When someone is killed in a Cedar Pass collision involving a wrong-way driver, the spouse and minor children in the family may file a wrongful death claim to obtain compensation. Although their grief will not be eased by filing this type of claim, it can help bring them closure and justice. A wrongful death lawyer can help you recover compensation for your loss.

Recovering Damages in Wrongful Death Cases

A variety of damages may be recoverable by the surviving family members, including:

  • Fees associated with funeral and burial or cremation
  • Financial support lost due to the loved one’s demise, such as their earnings
  • The loss of love, companionship, guidance, and consortium
  • Exceptionally egregious negligence may result in punitive damages

In California, wrongful death claims are subject to certain limitations. The estate of a deceased person or the surviving spouse and children may file a claim. When the decedent had no immediate family, his or her parents and siblings may be entitled to damages.

Contacting a Wrongful Death Lawyer for Advice

The sooner you speak with an experienced California wrongful death attorney, the better your chances of obtaining compensation for your loss. Your lawyer can help you understand your rights and guide you through the compensation process. Personal injury lawyers generally work on a contingency basis and offer free consultations. This means you owe the lawyer nothing unless he/she wins your case.
