Carquinez Bridge Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo car accident attorney. On Saturday, March 25, 2017, a crash involving multiple vehicles blocked traffic on three lanes of the eastbound portion of highway Interstate 80 near the Carquinez Bridge.

What Happened?

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers first received reports detailing the incident at about 8:56 p.m. William Ogilvie, an officer from CHP, indicated that the accident took place only a short distance west of the toll plaza located at the north end of the Carquinez Bridge in Vallejo.

Ogilvie noted that when CHP officers came upon the scene of the collision, they found that at least three separate vehicles had been involved in the crash and that the wreckage was completely blocking the number 2, 3, and 4 lanes of the eastbound section of the highway.

Injuries and Cleanup

Thankfully, none of the occupants of any of the vehicles involved in the crash reported any injuries, although it is possible that one or more of the people involved in the collision may have received injuries at which the symptoms will not be noticeable for days or even weeks.

Crews of workers from Cal-Trans were called to help remove the wreckage from the highway. At least one vehicle was totaled, having received major damage to its rear-end as a result of the accident. At the time of reporting, work crews were waiting for a flatbed tow truck to come and take the totaled vehicle away.

Resulting Traffic

The highway was not totally cleared for at least three hours and caused major traffic slowdown for drivers heading out of the Bay Area on Saturday night. Many drivers posted online complaining of traffic congestion lasting 40 minutes or more, especially at around 9:30 p.m.

Possible Causes

What might have caused the accident to occur is still under investigation. Possible causes of the accident include distracted driving, road rage, speeding, and defective vehicle parts. The CHP has not stated whether or not they believe alcohol and/or drugs to have played a part in causing the accident to happen.

Other Recent Vallejo Accidents

This accident has happened in the wake of several other accidents in Vallejo including an accident that occurred on Thursday, March 16 when a woman lost control of her vehicle while entering the freeway from the eastbound Tennessee Street on-ramp and crashed into a big-rig, subsequently involving another vehicle in the crash. Yet another recent incident occurred when a bicyclist was seriously injured near the intersection of Curtola Parkway and Sonoma Boulevard when she collided with a large SUV and fell off of her bicycle.
