Young Bicyclist Injured in Brentwood Crash

Police officers are in the midst of an investigation regarding a car vs. bike accident that injured an 8-year old boy, sending him to a local medical center via airlift. It happened at about 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. East Contra Costa Fire Protection District battalion chief Jake Gonzalez said firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a reported pedestrian collision at the intersection of O’Hara Avenue and Lone Tree Way in Brentwood.

Emerging Details of the Bicycle vs. Car Accident

After showing up to the scene, firefighters discovered an 8-year old boy from Brentwood that had allegedly sustained an abdominal injury. Emergency response crews performed on-site life-saving care while coordinating the arrival of a medical helicopter. Brentwood police also responded to the collision report, working on coordinating traffic in the affected area. In the meantime, Oakley police officers also assisted a battalion chief in organizing a landing spot for the helicopter, located at an open field by Freedom High School.

Firefighters carried the boy to the landing spot, where he was brought inside the helicopter and transported to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. An update on Wednesday from the Brentwood Police Department stated that the boy suffered minor injuries and is expected to have a full recovery.

In a statement also released on Wednesday, Brentwood police discussed their findings based on the preliminary investigation into the accident. The young bicyclist was traveling southwards down O’Hara Avenue when he approached the Lone Tree Way intersection during a red light. At that time, a Toyota Prius was going about 30 mph and struck the child, knocking him onto the ground.

The Toyota driver, a 40-year old resident of Brentwood, stayed at the scene and was reported to be fully cooperative with the investigation. There was no indication that alcohol or other illicit substances were involved in the accident, according to authorities.
