Cameron Park Man Killed in Las Vegas Shooting

I’m Ed Smith, a Cameron Park Wrongful Death Lawyer. Monday morning, the nation awoke to the horrifying news of the country’s deadliest mass shooting in recent history. The echoes of screams amidst repeated gunfire have been haunting the speakers of our televisions, tablets, and phones for days. The casualties continued to climb as reports flooded into the news stations while they reported, with solemn faces that a man in Las Vegas opened fire from a hotel window down onto the audience of an outdoor country music festival.

What Happened?

A 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada rented a room in the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the 32nd floor. On October 1, 2017, he broke his window and started firing rounds into the crowd of people who were across the street attending the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival just as Jason Aldean took the stage. The gunfire went on for 10-15 minutes as people were running in all directions. 58 people were killed by gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and other vital organs. About 500 other people were injured in the shooting and trampling from the mass panic of the crowd. When the police identified where the shots were coming from they stormed the room only to find the gunman’s body on the floor, apparently dead from a self inflicted wound.

Local Deaths

Among the 58 dead was a man from Cameron Park named Kurt Von Tillow. Kurt was the owner of Von Tillow Trucking as well as a loving husband and father. He was attending the concert with many members of his family as a sort of family reunion. His sister and niece were injured but are on track to recovery while his daughter, son-in-law, and wife were physically unharmed. Family, friends, and neighbors placed flowers, pictures, and beer in a memorial to Kurt along his backyard fence which is beside the Cameron Park Golf Course.

Kurt Von Tillow – A Caring Man with a Great Attitude

Kurt was beloved by all who knew him. They said that he was a caring man with a great attitude toward life. “He was just a fun, fun guy,” said longtime family friend, Iain Marshall who also spent a lot of time traveling with the Von Tillow’s. They went to Scotland and Ireland to play golf, one of Kurt’s most beloved pastimes. Marshall also said that Kurt loved beer and they would stop at every pub they saw. His favorite brand was Coors Light which friends placed along his fence in his memory.

Michelle Vo – UC Davis Graduate – Ambitious and Kind – Agent for New York Life

Michelle Vo, a local young woman who graduated from UC Davis in 2007 was also one of the victims who died in Las Vegas on Sunday Evening. She was attending her first country music concert. She had traveled from Los Angeles where she has been living and working as a life insurance agent for New York Life and also volunteered at the Red Cross. She was a hard worker with lots of ambition and will be missed dearly by family and friends.

Our deepest condolences go out to all those who were hurt or lost loved ones from this tragedy.
