The California Motorcycle Safety Program

Motorcycle Safety Program in California

What is the California Motorcyclist Safety Program?

The California Motorcyclist Safety Program is a safety course offered by the state for new and experienced motorcycle riders. Today, we will look at the program and all it has to offer riders of all experience levels.

A Brief Overview of the Course

The California Motorcyclist Safety Program takes only three days to complete and costs $260. The program is run through the Total Control program in the state, which took over the course when the motorcycle curriculum was replaced by California. The three days include a full day in the classroom (day one), a riding and classroom day (second day), and a riding and test day (third day). The program trains roughly 65,000 riders annually across 120 sites throughout the state.

Who Can Take the Course?

Anyone interested in motorcycles can take the course, which is not a requirement to obtain your motorcycle endorsement from the state of California. This includes experienced riders, new riders, riders who haven’t been on a bike in years, riders who have been involved in accidents, dirt bike off-roaders, and much more.

Are Students Road Legal?

Many motorcycle riders wonder if they are road-legal if they pass the test at the end of the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. The simple answer is no, they are not road-legal now. The rider still needs to pass the written test administered by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Passing the course does award riders the DMV DL389 certificate, which might allow riders to waive the skills riding test taken at the DMV.

Benefits of the Course

The California Motorcyclist Safety Program provides riders with a slew of benefits, including the following:

  • Learn the rules of the road
  • Learn how to maneuver congested roads
  • Gain confidence on a motorcycle
  • A renewed respect for fellow motorcycle riders
  • A solid foundation on which to build
