Traffic Safety Campaign in Brentwood
The Brentwood Police Department launched a special traffic safety campaign on Monday, April 1, 2019. The campaign primarily focuses on reminding the community to always drive with due regard and safety for others. This will be the first traffic campaign that the city has seen. The local police department intends to increase public awareness regarding traffic safety to improve the safety of all motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The new campaign promotes the slogan “Obey The Sign Or Pay The Fine.” Ultimately, the goal is to positively change people’s driving-related behaviors and enhance their awareness regarding road rules.
Traffic Fine in Brentwood
Brentwood’s minimum traffic fine for a seat belt or texting is $162. The minimum penalty for a stop sign ticket is $238, and the minimum fine for a red light ticket is $490. According to Tom Hansen, Brentwood Police Chief, the bottom line is to direct people’s attention to the severity that can come with failure to adhere to traffic laws. For this reason, the police department plans on being more aggressive in enforcing laws and issuing tickets. Hansen contends that people are much more likely to change their behavior after getting a citation and that verbal warnings tend to lack long-term effectiveness.
Traffic Statistics in Brentwood
Traffic is said to be the number one complaint issued among Brentwood residents. There were 445 injury-related traffic accidents in Brentwood last year, according to Sgt. Mark Louwerens, supervisor of Brentwood’s Traffic Unit. Louwerens noted that the number of non-injury car accidents was even higher. In addition, there were roughly 1,776 speeding citations issued in 2018 – which comes out to around 150 citations per month. Under the traffic safety enforcement campaign, local residents can anticipate increased law enforcement presence on the roads. The City of Brentwood accepted a $100,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to put more officers on the roads and for extended periods.
Educating the Public
This traffic campaign can be expected to educate and inform the public about general traffic safety and problematic local areas, the associated citation fines, and the most common collision factors. Presentations are already in the works to be featured at local high school driver’s education classes and auto shops. A total of 50 signs with the campaign’s slogan will be placed throughout roadways in Brentwood – keep an eye out for one next time you get behind the wheel.
