Head-On Crash in Brentwood

On Saturday, January 28, 2017, a head-on collision between two vehicles took place near Brentwood in Contra Costa County.

What Happened?

A construction truck and a sedan collided head-on at the intersection of Vasco and Camino Diablo roads in Brentwood. Injuries were reported but the severity and number of people hurt was not available. We have learned that airbags in at least one of the vehicles deployed as a result of the head-on collision. Tow trucks were dispatched to the scene. It took crews nearly an hour to clear the scene, while local law enforcement investigated the cause of the collision.

Who Caused the Crash?

It is too soon to know for sure. It typically takes about one week for an investigating agency to prepare a traffic collision report. Sometimes a traffic report is inconclusive or in error pertaining to fault. That is why it is important to contact an experienced car accident attorney who can investigate the sequence of events leading up to a crash and properly determine liability (fault).

Driving in the Diablo Range

Just over the Diablo Mountain range from the lush hills north of Santa Cruz, intersections like the one at Vasco Road and Camino Diablo can be particularly dangerous for motorists. Roads like Camino Diablo are one lane in each direction but intersect with major roadways that carry trucks towards I-5 and Sacramento and points further south.

As with other roads in the area, drivers looking to avoid a car accident in Brentwood need to be mindful of the rapid changes in road quality and grade. While it may be easy to handle these in an SUV or car, it can be difficult for a construction vehicle or hauler to try and make the transition from barreling down a rural road to one of the many access highways to an interstate.

It may not always be possible to find ways to avoid a car crash but watching for dust and being extra careful at intersections like the one where the construction truck and sedan collided may help. Providing extra clearance for larger vehicles may also reduce the likelihood of accidents.

Construction Accidents Beyond Work Zones

According to the Federal Highway Administration, collisions in work zones on the roadways are more fatal than in other areas of the highway system. In part, this is due to the vast differences in speeds between areas requiring maintenance and repairs and those open to normal traffic. Other issues include the changes in the lane design to accommodate space for backhoes and pavers.
