Bicycle Accident Injures Rider in Sacramento in Crash with Motorist

Bicycle Rider Injured at Howe Avenue Intersection

A bicycle accident with a motor vehicle caused injuries to the rider on April 18. The collision was reported at the intersection of Howe Avenue and Hurley Way by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The driver remained at the scene, and the bicyclist was transported by medics with the Sacramento Fire Department to Kaiser North for medical care and evaluation.

Bicycle Accident Being Investigated to Determine Cause

No information was released on the extent of injuries to the bicyclist. The accident is under investigation by the CHP to find out how it occurred and assign fault.

Bicycle Accidents That Involve Motor Vehicles

In some cases, a bicycle crash can happen that is the fault of the rider, and they are caused in ways similar to drivers of motor vehicles. In other accidents, the motorist is negligent, which leads to bicycle accident injuries. Some of the ways in which these accidents happen include:

  • The driver cuts into the bike lane to make a right turn without looking for the presence of a bicycle rider.
  • A driver parks on the street or other parking spot, and someone opens their door without looking for the presence of a bicyclist, motorcyclist, or other vehicle. Being involved in a dooring accident can result in serious injuries.
  • A bicyclist is crossing at an intersection, and a driver makes a turn and strikes them.
  • The motorist ignores the California three-foot rule and causes a bicycle accident.
  • The driver runs a red light at the same time a rider is crossing the street, causing a bicycle accident.
  • The driver is distracted because they are texting or talking on a cell phone and doesn’t notice a rider, leading to a serious bicycle crash.
  • A driver is drunk or impaired by drugs, which makes it difficult for them to stay in their lane and handle the vehicle.

Recovering Compensation Following a Bicycle Accident

A bicycle rider who is injured by a negligent driver can place a claim for compensation, which can pay for their injuries, pain and suffering and lost wages. To hold the motorist accountable, it must be proven that they were at fault for the bicycle accident. Our injury lawyers have successfully handled many cases of this type and are here to offer you free advice and answer your questions.

Investigating a Bicycle Accident Injury

Because fault has to be shown for an injured party to obtain compensation, we send out investigators out to collect the evidence needed. They go directly to the site of the bicycle accident and:

  • Our investigators examine the bicycle accident site and gather evidence such a broken pieces of metal or paint. They also look for skid marks, which can indicate if the driver was speeding at the time of the collision.
  • Forensic reconstruction of the accident is performed. This demonstrates the positioning of the motor vehicle and bicycle before, during, and after the crash.
  • They review the police report to ensure its accuracy because an error could affect our client’s ability to place a compensation claim.
  • The investigators search the area for surveillance cameras that could have caught the accident on tape. This type of compelling evidence is useful both in negotiations on the client’s behalf with the insurance company and in court.
