Bicycle Accident Fatally Injures Turlock Man

I’m Ed Smith, a Turlock car accident lawyer. A Turlock man was bicycling in south Turlock during the evening hours of Monday, February 12, 2018. This would, unfortunately, be the last bicycle ride the man will take due to an unforeseen bicycle accident.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the friends and family of Mr. Gerard who lost his life in this heart-wrenching tragedy.

What Happened?

A Turlock man was riding his bicycle southbound along Lander Avenue in the vicinity of Clausen Road at approximately 8:55 pm. At the same time, a Ceres man was driving his 2012 Toyota southbound along Lander Avenue. The driver of the Toyota claimed that he did not see the bicyclist, resulting in a serious collision. Tragically, several other vehicles reportedly crashed into the bicyclist while he was down in the roadway after the initial collision. The Toyota driver pulled over and immediately contacted 911 to the scene.

Nature of Injuries

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene to offer immediate aid to the injured bicyclist. Sadly, the bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.

Identity of Victim

Officials have identified the victim of the accident as 43-year-old Bret Jason Gerard of Turlock.

What Caused the Accident?

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played as factors in this collision.

Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle accidents are a common problem in California. Bicyclists are susceptible to serious injury or even death due to their lack of physical protection. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 726 cyclists were fatally injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2014 alone. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the city of Turlock experienced 18 bicycle accidents in 2015, with 5 involving minors age 15 and under. Drivers are obligated to share the road and exercise due care while traveling near bicyclists. Failure to do so can result in severe penalties. If you or a loved one has been injured in a bicycle accident, you do not have to endure this hardship alone. Hiring a seasoned Turlock personal injury lawyer is crucial in obtaining fair compensation for incurred damages.
