Benicia Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Benicia car accident lawyer. Recently, I reported on an accident that occurred in Benicia on Friday, August 4, 2017, in which a Solano County woman suffered fatal injuries. Since the time of reporting, authorities have released more details about the incident. A review of the accident, as well as the additional details, can be read in the blog that follows.

Accident Review

The accident occurred at around 6:05 a.m. on the westbound portion of highway Interstate 680 close to the connecting ramp for westbound highway Interstate 780 at the north end of the Benicia Bridge. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident had involved a big-rig truck as well as at least one other vehicle.

New Information

CHP has released more detailed reports indicating that a 22-year-old woman and airman of Travis Air Force Base had been driving northbound in a Honda sedan on the Benicia bridge when she collided with the rear end of a large, slow-moving tractor-trailer in the rightmost lane. The woman had reportedly not been wearing a seatbelt and authorities indicated that she may have been speeding prior to the accident.

After striking the rear end of the truck, the Honda veered across the highway in front of all lanes of traffic and eventually collided with the median wall before coming to a stop.

Response and Injury

Emergency medical responders dispatched by CHP reported that the woman was declared deceased at the scene of the collision. They also indicated that the driver of the large truck, a man from Modesto, had not sustained any injuries. Authorities have not reported that any other individuals were involved in the crash.

Investigation

Contra Costa CHP is investigating the incident to learn more about what caused the woman’s vehicle to strike the truck. CHP has reported that drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have been part of the incident. Anybody with information that might help officers better understand the accident has been asked to call Contra Costa CHP at this number: (925) 646-4980

Conspicuity

Sometimes drivers don’t notice what is in front of them. The factors that may cause drivers to be unaware of others on the roadway are diverse and include medical emergencies, unavoidable distractions, DUI, and more. However, those looking to ensure that they are noticed by other motorists can take steps to do so.

For instance, motorcyclists, who are typically the most difficult to notice on the road, can make a difference by using their headlights, wearing bright colors, and even painting their motorcycle a brighter, more noticeable color.
