BART Introduces Solar Power

BART Introduces Solar Power

The Board of Directors authorized Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to work with Solar City on an upcoming Lafayette and Antioch station project.

BART Customers – Made in the Shade

The Board of Directors for BART signed a multi-million dollar contract with Solar City on Thursday, October 27, 2016, to install solar panels at its new stations. The agreement indicates that BART will be purchasing generated electricity from these installations. The main goal of BART is to provide a fast and efficient method of transportation for commuters that decreases the carbon footprint of motor vehicles in the Bay Area. For these reasons, the solar panel project not only offers excellent alternatives for environmentally friendly energy consumption for the environment but will also provide customers with a shade over some areas of the parking lots for both stations.

Project Information

The project cost is estimated to be approximately $3 or $4 million for the stations in Antioch and Lafayette. The project will be funded by the budget for energy operations. The installment of the solar panels for the Lafayette station is expected by late spring of 2017 and in Antioch by fall 2017.
