Stockton Man Arrested in Connection with Deadly Crash

Police arrested a Stockton man for suspicion of murder on Monday, August 22, 2016, in connection with a tragic crash that ended the lives of three people in July.

Victims Rear-Ended While Stopped

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that 41-year-old, Tobie Durham, was behind the wheel of the Jaguar that slammed at high speed into the rear of a Honda that had been stopped in the eastbound lanes of travel along Kiernan Avenue, near Tully Road on July 15, 2016.

Both Vehicles Burst Into Flames

The Jaguar was lodged underneath the rear of the Honda. Both vehicles erupted into flames. Durham allegedly fleed from the scene of the fiery crash.  But sadly, the driver and two other occupants inside of the Honda were unable to escape and passed away inside the burning vehicle.

Identities of Those Who Passed Away

The victims that passed away were the driver, 23-year-old Balmor Hernandez, of Manteca, and the passenger riding in the front seat, 23-year-old, Alexander Jolley, of Stockton. The passenger riding in the back seat was initially identified as a 25-year-old female visiting from El Salvador (a cousin to Hernandez).  Officials are waiting for DNA test results for verification of her official identity.

Official Cause of Death

All three victims passed away from acute smoke and soot inhalation.

Tracking Down the Suspect

CHP personnel said investigating officers learned Durham was the suspect within 48 hours of the collision. For the past month, authorities have used several technology warrants while continuing to search for Durham’s whereabouts. They received their information from evidence collected and witnesses.

Attorney For Durham Arranges Surrender

An attorney for Durham contacted authorities and indicated he was available for surrender.

Authorities made the arrest at the attorney’s law office.

Durham is now sitting in the Stanislaus County jail and is not eligible for bail. No court date has been scheduled as of this writing.
