Accident Near Maryal Drive Injures Motorcycle Rider

A motorcycle crash involving a Toyota Prius occurred in Sacramento on August 11, which sent the rider to the hospital. The accident happened around 1:42 in the afternoon at Watt Avenue close to Maryal Drive in the Arden-Arcade area when the Prius struck the motorcyclist. The rider’s condition was unreported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP); however, the injured person was taken to a hospital after being assessed by paramedics with the Sacramento Fire Department. The accident is being investigated by the CHP to find out how it occurred.

Dangers of a Motorcycle Crash

Motorcyclists are vulnerable in a collision because they have little protection against injuries. In addition, drivers of passenger vehicles are attuned to watch out for other motorists but not for motorcycle riders, pedestrians and others. Some of the worst injuries can occur as a result of a motorcycle crash, and the following types of trauma are the most common:

  • Traumatic brain injuries occur in many motorcycle accidents, although the percentage is lower in those who are wearing the required protective helmets. A TBI may range from a concussion that heals within several months to more serious trauma that can permanently alter the individual’s life. According to a study by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, even among helmeted riders, about 15 percent still suffer a head injury in a motorcycle crash.
  • Injuries to the lower extremities: These were the most common injuries in a motorcycle crash as reported by the NHTSA. Fractured bones occur more frequently than injuries to soft tissues.
  • Spinal cord trauma: Damage to the spinal cord can result in temporary or permanent paralysis. The extent of the paralysis depends on the location of the trauma but can result in paraplegia or quadriplegia, necessitating home health care and making the rider unable to care for themself.
  • Internal injuries: Blunt force trauma or a penetration injury can result in severe trauma to the abdomen. These injuries can be caused by striking a sharp piece of metal, flying glass, or other causes. Injuries may range from broken ribs to internal bleeding or damage to an organ. Any of these types of trauma can be life-threatening and require emergency surgery to perform repairs.
  • Road rash: Road rash often occurs to the rider during a motorcycle crash. Although many cases of road rash heal with time, more severe injuries can debride the skin, and infection is a real concern since the area can become embedded with road debris.
  • Bone fractures in the extremities: Although any bone can break because of a motorcycle crash, bones in the legs being fractured are common, especially if the bike lands on them. Hand, wrist, and arm fractures occur if the rider is ejected and puts their arms out to try and break their fall.

Success in Settling Motorcycle Crash Accidents

Over the years, my team of injury attorneys and I have successfully handled many accidents where a negligent motorist injured a motorcycle rider. We understand how insurance companies try to make the motorcyclist seem to be at fault and know how to counter all their arguments. It is grossly unfair for a negligent motorist to get away with causing an injury and not being held accountable.

Compensation That Can Be Recovered After a Motorcycle Crash

By filing a personal injury claim, the injured motorcycle rider can obtain compensation to pay all of their medical expenses, now and in the future if the injury is ongoing. Filing a claim can also recover their lost wages and reimburse them for their pain and suffering. You owe us nothing until we’ve won your case.
